CHAPTER 13

Stasia had spent the somber remnants of breakfast and the quiet tour of Archer’s library telling herself that she should not initiate further intimacy with him. That if she did so, it would only make their inevitable parting that much more difficult for her. But the moment he had begun to reveal more of his past, standing by the window looking so brutally handsome and sad, she knew it would be impossible to maintain any sort of distance.

Because she loved him.

She longed for him.

She wanted him desperately.

And now, she was naked in his bedchamber again, kissing him as he helped her to remove the same gown and undergarments he had aided her in donning mere hours before. Her arm pained her less this morning, the wound bearing more of an acute ache deep inside the sliced flesh than anything else. Perhaps Lucky’s poultice was doing its work. Or perhaps her body was far too consumed by other, far-more-pleasurable sensations to be bothered by the injury.

It hardly seemed to matter, because Archer was stringing a trail of kisses over her collarbone, his mouth hot and firm, his silken hair brushing her cheek. She clutched his shoulder with her good hand, newly grateful that it was her left arm that had been wounded instead of her right.

“You’re wearing far too many clothes,” she protested, noting that he had only shucked his coat thus far, whilst she was down to her petticoat and stays. “I want to feel you, to see you. To kiss you.”

“Patience,” he murmured against her skin, kissing the hollow of her throat. “I don’t want to hurt your arm.”

“To the devil with my arm,” she said, frustrated. “It shall heal, but I only have you now.”

He lifted his head, emerald gaze finding hers, his countenance solemn. “You have me always, Princess. Near or far, I’m yours. If you call me, I will come to you.”

He was utterly serious, burning with an intensity she’d never seen in him before. Emotion swelled within her heart, love making her throat go thick and her eyes blur with tears.

“Thank you,” she whispered, blindly finding his mouth and kissing him.

He cupped her nape, his lips ravishing and voracious, the salt of her tears mingling with the taste of him.

“No.” Archer kissed the corner of her mouth, the tenderness in his voice alone enough to make her weep anew. “Don’t cry, love. I don’t want you sad. I want you burning for me.”

As if in demonstration, he swept his hands over her eager body, bringing it back to life beneath his clever touch. What would she do without him? How would she possibly be able to walk away from him forever and marry another man?

He kissed her again, this one deeper than the last, his tongue sliding against hers, teasing her into a response. With a moan, she released his shoulder and moved her hand higher, grasping a handful of his hair. I love you, she told him with her lips and tongue, with the way her body twined around his.
